Toronto’s new Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) team, the Toronto Tempo, has gained a powerful ally. On March 3, 2025, it was announced that tennis legend Serena Williams has joined the ownership group of the city’s first-ever WNBA franchise.
“I am thrilled to announce my ownership role in the first Canadian WNBA team, the Toronto Tempo,” Williams said. She emphasized the importance of investing in women's sports, calling it a strong business opportunity and a crucial step in elevating female athletes.
The ownership group is led by Kilmer Sports Ventures, headed by Canadian businessman Larry Tanenbaum. Tanenbaum expressed his admiration for Williams, calling her an “icon, a role model, and a force for change in the world.” He praised her tenacity, determination, and success in overcoming challenges, stating, “She exemplifies the very best of what the Tempo stand for—we couldn’t be more honored to have Serena in our court.”
Williams will take an active role in shaping the team’s visual identity, including jersey designs and merchandise collaborations. The involvement of such a globally recognized figure is expected to boost the Tempo’s brand visibility and appeal.
Team president Teresa Resch also lauded Williams' addition to the organization, calling her “the greatest athlete of all time.” Resch added, “Her impact on this team and this country is going to be incredible. She's set the bar for women in sport, business, and the world—and her commitment to using that success to create opportunities for other women is inspiring.”
The Toronto Tempo will debut at the Coca-Cola Coliseum in 2026. As part of its national outreach, the team will also host regular-season games in Montreal and Vancouver. Fans eager to support Canada’s first WNBA team can register for the Season Ticket Waitlist at tempo.wnba.com.

The Caribbean Camera reached out to Serena Williams’PR agency to ask her if she would be moving to Toronto next year, or if she would be attending any of the games in Montreal and Toronto. Max Wolfe Los Angeles Publicist for Williams’ gave the Caribbean Camera a rather brief response
“We aren’t providing any further comment besides the below quote that Serena personally posted on social media Wolfe responded. “"I am thrilled to announce my ownership role in the first Canadian WNBA team, the Toronto Tempo," said Serena Williams. "This moment is not just about basketball; it is about showcasing the true value and potential of female athletes — I have always said that women's sports are an incredible investment opportunity. I am excited to partner with Larry and all of Canada in creating this new WNBA franchise and legacy."
