 Roger Gibbs is Alive and Singing

For Calypso scholar and singer Roger Gibbs, every day is Calypso Day. On Oct 15, however, he will be moderating a symposium titled Calypso in Canada: Past, Present, and Future, as part of the official Calypso History Month.

The Organization of Calypso Performing Artists (OCPA), in collaboration with the Blackhurst Cultural Centre and Kaiso Street Society, is presenting a series of talks and discussions exploring the rich history and evolution of Canadian Calypso. The first event will take place on October 15, 2024, from 7:00–9:30 PM at the Blackhurst Cultural Centre, 777 Bathurst Street, Toronto, next to Another Booklist store.

Prominent Calypso artists and experts—including Jesse Ryan, Rhoma Spencer, Henry Gomez, Lindy Burgess, and Macomere Fifi—will share stories and insights into the Canadian Calypso scene.

Roger Gibbs, who will moderate the discussion, told Caribbean Camera that “this discussion will be the first of several planned by OCPA this year and next."

“We want to take a scholarly look at what is happening with Calypso music here," Gibbs continued. "How do we differ from Caribbean Calypso? We really want to let Canadians know what is happening here. We are producing something unique. Kobo Town, David Rudder, King Cosmos—there is real world demand for what’s being done here.”

Gibbs emphasized that one of OCPA's goals, now that COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, is to revive the Calypso tents and encourage young people to perform on stage.

Upcoming Calypso Events

Four days after the symposium, the Consulate General of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago in Toronto is set to host a vibrant celebration of Calypso History Month. On October 19, 2024, the Consulate will present a special commemorative event that highlights the rich cultural heritage of Calypso music.

The event, featuring presentations from renowned historians and performances by celebrated Calypsonians, is free to attend, though limited seats remain. Key presenters include Prof. Ramabai Espinet, historian and author George Maharaj, radio host Mortimer, and Drew Gonzales of Kobo Town. Jesse Ryan, grandson of the legendary Mighty Bomber, will also share insights into Calypso’s evolution and its global influence.

Performances will feature Calypsonians such as Villaz, Mr. Wonderful, King Cosmos, Moses from the band Moses Revolution, and Glen Cassa of Los Pajaros, backed by the lively Crab and Callaloo Kaiso Band. The evening promises a unique opportunity to experience the soul of Calypso firsthand.

Drumming Too

York University’s East Accolade Building will come alive with the vibrant sounds of the Caribbean on Friday, October 11, as the Fall/Winter ISGSA Caribbean Drum Circle takes place in Room 122 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

This event will feature popular and traditional drum rhythms and chants, offering participants an immersive cultural experience. Organized by the ISGSA, the drum circle will provide an opportunity for the university community to connect with Caribbean music and heritage.
