MORNING TO AFTERNOON, SON TO WORK WITH MOTHER?

One of CHUM-fm radio’s only Black voices has left his morning spot

By Stephen Weir It is morning. You get into your car and turn on your radio for the latest traffic, weather, and your favorite tunes. But wait, something is wrong. That isn’t Jamar McNeil talking in your ear—the main man on Toronto’s leading morning station, CHUM-FM, isn’t there anymore.

When listening to Toronto radio stations, when a voice suddenly goes missing, it often means that the host has been given the boot. Fired. No one retires. But that is not the case with the ever-popular Jamar. After six years of being the co-host of the Marilyn Denis and Jamar morning show, he has been moved to the afternoon shift where he is now the co-host with Josie Dye.

According to the Toronto Mike’d podcast, (which follows the comings and goings of Toronto radio hosts), Jamar was moved to the afternoon to replace Meredith Shaw “after Shaw's move to become a host on Breakfast Television on CITY-TV.”
“I’m a proud Jamaican and American citizen. My Caribbean background has greatly influenced my life,” wrote Jamar. Prior to coming to Canada in 1998, the New Yorker was a popular radio host (The J Show) in Washington, Miami, Chicago, and Cleveland.
Jamar McNeil (pictured above) is one of the only Black radio hosts at CHUM-FM. He is much beloved and is very much a part of the community. Two years ago, he sent video messages ofencouragement for the Grade 12 students from Jane Finch taking part in a March of Excellence to York University (which is happening again today!).
Sixty-five-year-old Marilyn Denis has been the host of CHUM-FM’s morning show since 1986. There is a social media rumour suggesting that her son, Adam Wylde, will replace Jamar as the co-host of the morning show.
Josie Dye is a relatively new voice on the Afternoon Drive. She left Indie 88 FM in November to come to CHUM 104.5. In addition to her radio announcing, she is also the host of the Cynthia and Josie’s Unmentionables podcast with The Social’s Cynthia Loyst.
