Meet the junior
sized King and Queen of this year’s Toronto Caribbean Carnival. Lift up a glass of soda and salute Caneisha
Edwards and Evan Murphy - For the next three weeks they are the toast of the
town!
The second annual
Toronto Caribbean Carnival’s Junior King and Queen Showcase was held outdoors
on Sunday afternoon at the Woodbine Mall. Under a cloudless skies and blazing
hot temperatures, children in elaborate mas costumes competed for the titles of
Junior King and Queen.
The Mall, located
at Rexdale Blvd and Highway 27, erected a large stage and bleachers in its
parking lot.
The afternoon
competition for the young revelers, mirrors the annual adult King and Queen
Showcase held outdoors at Lamport Stadium during the final week of carnival. “The Kings, the
Queens, and individuals of the Carnival bands unveil their elaborately themed
costumes highlighting the creative minds and imagination of the designers,” is how the
organizers describe both events.
And while the
adult Showcase is always sold-out, the free Junior King and Queen event played
out to a loudly supportive audience of about 400 people. One parent in the
stands posted on social media his support for the Showcase, “If we are to
measure what to expect for the 2018 Toronto Caribbean Carnival by what we say
this weekend at the Junior Carnival King and Queen Showcase then we're in for a
treat.”
There were six
levels of competition – male and female individuals under 10, male and female
individuals under 12, and junior queen and junior king. Most of the mas camps
who will be taking park in the coming August 2nd King and Queen Showcase had
children taking part in Sunday’s fete.
The winning Junior
Queen, Caneisha Edwards, wore an Alice in Wonderland Queen Costume for Tribal
Carnival. This is the second year that
Edwards has won the crown. The King, Evan Murphy is also a repeat winner for Venom
Carnival.
As of yesterday
afternoon – the Caribbean Camera deadline – the Festival Management Committee
had not issued the names and bands of the win, place and shows of the Sunday’s
competition. The paper will use social
media to post the names and camps when the official list is issued
Missed the
Woodbine Mall presentation? All the
competitors will be in costume and on the road in Malvern this Saturday for the
Junior
Carnival Parade and Family Fair. Over 2,000 youngsters are expected to
be in the 11 am parade Malvern and Neilson Parks, Scarborough. The parade starts at 11am and the family fair
ends at 8pm.
